BIG News: Toll Plazas On Highway Will End, New Toll System Instead Of FASTag.
Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has promised to end the toll plazas system on highway very soon by introducing a new system. Gadkari said toll plazas have created many problems like traffic snarls and long queues, which the government wants to end.
Gadkari on Wednesday told that his ministry is considering two technologies to put an end to the physical toll plazas across the NH network. These two technologies are GPS-based and Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR)-based tolling systems.
How will the toll be deducted from GPS?
Under this technology, you have to fix a GPS device in your car. As soon as you bring the vehicle on the tolled highway, the calculation of toll will start and the money will be deducted according to the distance you have traveled on that road. This amount will be deducted directly from your bank account, so you will also have to give information about your bank account to the government. Also you have to register your vehicle under this system. With the help of GPS based toll system, the discount on toll to the local people may be stopped.
What will be the benefit?
If the GPS based toll system is implemented, then people will not have to pay fixed charges, but they will have to pay the same amount as far as they have traveled. This will also get rid of the problem of jams near toll plazas. Along with this, the cases of violence coming to the toll plaza every day will also end.
Meanwhile, according to official data, FASTag penetration has surged from nearly 16% in 2017-18 to 96.3% in 2021-22. Total toll collection during 2017-18 was ₹21,948 crore, including ₹3,532 crore collected through FASTag. However, in 2021-22, toll collection through FASTags increased sharply to ₹33,274 crore out of a total toll collection of ₹34,535 crore.
